Marshall Grove has been a cornerstone of our family for generations, built in 1982 by RL and Doris Marshall, a devoted couple who spent their careers as distillers at Jim Beam. They were married for 50 years and created a lifetime of memories together, raising four children and welcoming six grandchildren. Marshall Grove was the place where everyone gathered for Christmas dinners, Easter egg hunts, and countless moments of love and togetherness.
RL, known for his deep appreciation of nature, found joy in tending the land, fishing, watching songbirds from the kitchen window, and visiting with neighbors. A true Kentuckian, he loved his trips to Keeneland, where he placed bets and shared laughs with friends. Doris, or Memaw, was the heart of the home, always ready with a kind word, sewing projects in hand, and a story to share. She found joy in time spent with her grandchildren, long conversations with friends, and visits to Shelbyville to see her sisters. Together, RL and Doris also took on another chapter in their lives as the owners of Jim’s Seafood in downtown Frankfort from 2004 to 2013, welcoming diners with the same warmth and hospitality that defined their home.
Though RL and Doris have passed—Doris in April 2019 and RL in March 2024—their spirit lives on in every inch of Marshall Grove. This home remains a beloved gathering place, where family members come to feel close to their grandparents and the legacy of love and kindness they built. Now, we are honored to extend that same warmth to the greater community, inviting others to experience the peace and beauty that have made Marshall Grove such a meaningful place for our family.
